I’ve been a Gang Starr FAN since day one & G.U.R.U is one of my biggest influences in carrying on the TRADITION that IS Hip Hop Rejoice In Prestige (R.I.P) KING…!!
This is DJ SoulClap from Germany. I just wanna get off my chest, that Guru is one of the reason why I’m doing this. I will always keep him and his music in my heart! RIP Guru!
1994. George’s Music room, Chicago. GangStarr signin autographs…. DJ Premiere tried to autograph my rhyme book, I took it from him "Nah, joe – I need Guru to bless that….you sign this album cover" haha GURU signed a full page in my composition book…next to NAS’s "Get paid, God" autograph. #CLASSIK
Guru, you got me through the rough times. Now you are above the clouds lookin down. You have met your moment of truth, and we all will keep feelin the music. We love you man. R.I.P
There will never be another song that makes me feel like Mass Appeal. Then hearing his music beyond just that song, Gang Starr’s impact on music is felt anytime jazz finds it’s way into a hip-hop beat. Much love to DJ Premier and God Bless Guru’s family.
R.I.U. GURU. Manifest, DWICK etal. are all classics. You helped add to this landscape we call hip hop. May the memory of who you are on record overshadow any nonsense that has manifested as of late. Easy.
The profound influence that GANG STARR had on me and my group cannot be overstated. It’s in everything from our music to the way we talk. They were a brick in the foundation of everything I stand for as an artist and a representative of hip-hop culture
"daily operation" has to be a top 5 all-time hip-hop album. it truly stands among the giants, "nation of mil," "illmatic," "36 chambers." i have savored every Guru verse since i first heard "the place where we dwell." guru, you are truly one of the grandmaster MCs. so much wonderful wordplay — has there ever been a finer verse written than the first verse of "flip the script?" cooler than wind, harder than cold steel. rest in peace, man.
I was bumping MASS APPEAL on my way to work today. You and Premier put it down like no other Rap Group ever did. My you find happiness where you are headed like you had here during your time.

My prayers go out to him as well as his friends & family. Stay Strong.
"Above the clouds where the sounds are original, infinite skills create miracles"… rip Guru, one half of the greatest and most pure hip hop duo to ever do it.
I was blessed to have met GURU on several occasion but the first time I met him was probably the most memorable. It was 97 and we were at club ZEN on South Beach back when Washington was still cool. I was with Tony Touch at some other spot when Tony said lets bounce and meet up with GURU at ZEN. I was more than excited to meet dude. About 10 minutes after we were introduced, some dude pulled out a gun and licked off a couple of shots after an altercation with another dude at the club. We all hit the deck and after it was all over we put one up. It was one crazy night and I will never forget it.
REST IN PEACE GURU I REMEMBER BOTH GUR AND DJ PREMIRE LISTENING TO THEIR MUSIC , YOU WILL BE MISSED BY MANY , GOD SAW IT WAS YOUR TIME TO REST , AND CAME AND GENTLY GUDIED YOU HOME TO HEAVEN!!! GONE BUT WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN !!!!
Guru, you were the best person I look to for inspiring words. Your work made me into who I am and the writer that I am. So with that said from one writer to another, I love ya man. You belong in heaven with the great artists that are already there. You, Pac, Biggie, Big L, Big Pun and the list goes on. My prayers goes out to your family and extended family (Premo).

Grew up with you in London and Gangstarr and never turned back. Changed my adolescent ears and listening and took me places I never knew existed. Nodded my head and got passionate, activist-thinking, questioning, became a DJ and danced like never before. Thanks for all now and in the future, GURU you came to this world and you truly Stepped Into The Arena. We’ll never forget you! Peace
True Rap Legend and Hip Hop gentleman. Classic albums, classic tracks, bona fide giant in the game. Managed to catch a few Gang Starr concerts in my time and thankful to God that I saw a Phenom at the top of his game. his music and Legacy will live on. Peace, love and prayers to Guru’s family and loved ones. R.I.P Guru Never Forgotten Majestic Glasgow Scotland United Kingdom
I remember listing to the mixtapes when I was younger with Gangstarr going.. Everyone knew DJ Premier and you always knew when Guru was on the Mic. Usually rappers die over stupidity, but it was unfortunate that Guru was taken by God. Rest in Peace bro!
Your music was introduced to me at a magical time when Hip Hop was golden, and I looked to it for spiritual guidance. Your music saved me from my own fears and made me believe in the positive and the reality. Much love to you Guru, please watch over us and your legacy will be here forever.

Gangstarr is my favorite group ever ! It’s crazy that a Boston emcee and DJ from Texas defined New York City Hip-Hop. You’ll be truely missed. So many classics. MUCH RESPECT.
Yo this the saddest day for hip hop EVER. We lost more than music with this good man, I guess God works in mysterious ways but this is still big shit to deal with. Rest In Peace
The closest I ever came to him was knowing his name and his work and the joy from the memories that were inspired as a result I will hold dear for a long time to come if not forever.
R.I.P. Elder Brother! (truly, you were gifted with universal rhymes unlimited.)
Guru, you were truly a thinking man’s rapper. You were a man when you stepped in the arena and everyone saw that. Standing tall as an example, you personified the maturity hip-hop was growing into. You were an inspiration to so many hip-hop followers both male and female. We will all miss you as you were taken from us far too soon. Thank you for taking that trip to Brooklyn. God Bless.
RIP GURU…NY accepted you as there son and we will love you as a brother ETERNALLY. RIP LEGEND Gangstarr 4life. Where infinite skills create miracles…Above the clouds…Above the clouds.
I was lucky enough to meet Guru at Coachella back in 2001. He actually took time out to say hi, and told me he was performing after Roni Size Reprazent. I was able to tell him that I was a big fan of his, Gangstarr, and loved his music. He was the nicest guy I could’ve ever met! He’ll be truly missed!
Never met but I listened to his so much as a kid (Step in the Arena) that is feels like I met him… his music certainly touched me and made me beleive that Hip-Hop wasn’t restricted… IT TRANSCENDS ALL CULTURES!!!

The lines on "Moment of Truth" put a lot in perspective to me at a time I needed it. You will forever be remembered as one of the illest that ever did it.
Gang Starr is the reason why I got into the Hip Hop game. their album The Ownerz changed my life!
I was really hoping to see a Gang Starr reunion sometime in my life too but I’m glad to have been graced by their amazing music! Gang Starr = one of the best yet
Never met him but I listened to his music so much as a kid (Step in the Arena) that it feels like I met him… his music certainly touched me and made me believe that Hip-Hop wasn’t restricted… IT TRANSCENDS ALL CULTURES!!!
"And you can beg for me to stay and parlay–but sorry, I gots to go, got bills to pay" – Guru…I rapped every word to "Take it Personal" this AM on the mainstream hip-hop station after not hearing it for years. I had 0 Idea why they played that AM drive time…Such big part of my life I always underated…
Guru was a true brother. I got to hang and talk with him at various industry events and conferences, not to mention the numerous interviews over the last 20 years. I wish peace and comfort for your family my friend. You were and will always be an inspiration. Tha ks for the knowledge, the memories, the timeless music. One love, we’ll always be "In Deep Concentration".

As a kid growing up in rural California I didn’t have much access to new "hiphop" Gangstarr albums became like rare comics to me. Thank GOD it was these records that I based my opinion of "real" hiphop. Years later "Jazzamatazz" taught me about Jazz. Now from the afterlife you are teaching me the most important lesson of all: stay focused for your ENTIRE life & never give up. Thanks for the lessons in life, the music & most of all the inspiration. Rest in Power Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal. -Dj Dotkom (Reno)
A major loss for the music world. The contributions that Guru and DJ Premier have made are unmatched. One of the best lyricists and one of the most unique voices in the history of American music. Ase’ Keith Elam. Ase’.
Gangstarr have been a part of my life since Words I Manifest hit the scene in ’88. Guru & Premier changed my life forever! They remain in permanent daily rotation for me, whether in my car, ipod @ the gym, or exposing my 3 yr old to the wonders of our beautiful culture. Guru was the beast that pushed Preemo to his absolute greatest heights. May the Creator hold him close to his heart! Guru was right about 1 thing: Respect WILL outlast cash! GIFTED UNLIMITED RHYMES UNIVERSAL! GANGSTARR FOREVER! Rest In Everlasting Power Keith Elam!
I could never forget that night of 94′ i think at licabitus theatre in athens, greece when i met him, shook his hand and he signed on my copy of Daily operation. May he Rest in Peace….He will foverer be a legend
My D&D Brother! You will be surely missed but there is no more pain, no more suffering & no more evil from other people. Tell HEADCOURTER I said "Head Up, Eyes & Ears Open!" and Remember Keith, We All Love You!
Guru will be deeply missed..In the suburbs he’s what we played for our parents to make it ok to listen to hip hop…"Lemonade was a popular drink and it still is…"
Guru and Gang Starr opened up a world of music to me. I developed a taste for jazz before i even knew much about it. Some of the best hip hop ever created. I am deeply saddened to hear of this news. Much love. Guru forever..
GANGSTARR is HIP-HOP PERSONIFIED. A PERFECT MARRIAGE BETWEEN BEATS AND FLOWS, MUSIC AND VOICE, LOVE AND RESPECT. WHEN DJ PREMIER’S TRACKS WOULD BLAST THRU MY SPEAKERS, GURU’S RHYMES WOULD DISAPPEAR INTO THE DANCE OF KICKS AND SNARES. HIS VOICE WAS AN INSTRUMENT THAT BLENDED SEAMLESSLY WITH THE SOUNDSCAPE HIP HOP PROVIDED. HIS VOICE WAS LEGENDARY. GURU WAS HIP HOP PERSONIFIED, AND AS LONG AS HIP HOP IS ALIVE, AS LONG AS THERE IS A KID OUT THERE WRITING RHYMES…GURU WILL LIVE FOREVER.
You inspired me. Showed it was more to it then guns and drugs. You were a poet bruh. Bumping moment of truth for the last hour. You are missed and greatly appreciated. Hip Hop lives on through your music and your memory.
RIP Guru. Definitely an inspiration to the people and artists coming up. Gangstarr was always and will be on rotation for years and decades to come.. Much praises from Hawaii..
R.I.P 2 one of the greats. I appreciate the phone call you made to me back in 04. It really helped to lift my spirits. Your work here is done but will 4eva live on. Heaven has just admitted new Royalty into the kingdom!!!
Gangstarr has been influential in my loving of HIP HOP music. I have always been a fan since 96 when I first heard Gangstarr in my freinds car bumping it,and will continue to be until my passing. Thank You GURU!
I remember when I first heard this brother. I instantly loved his music and aura. That was over 20 years ago. Thank you brother for your contribution to my life through your music.
RIP to the Master MC with all his knowledge and true wisdom!! you will live on in the hearts and minds of all of us!! You were my inspiration to love hip hop!! We know you truly loved Dj Premire and my heart goes out to him and your family!! RIP badman
Thru good and bad times, you have been in my headphones. Like a father teaching his son to fish, you were there to instruct me on the quality of music. You are physically gone, but your soul embraces the earth. YOU WILL LIVE ON THRU MY CHILDRENS KIDS, AND THEN THEIR KIDS, AND SO ON. I GAURANTEE THAT. FULL CLIP.
Will never remember Lowlands festival 199 9, Gang Starr feauturing the Militia & getting a call a few days later frommy Mom & she had just met you on a bridge in Germany! You will be joyed for everything you have done! Never be forgotten! Thanks
Im a young gal who grew up with the empowering soulful music of this beautiful soul. And through his lyrics and his melodies and his collaborations you knew this man was a hero, an innovator and a provocative leader goin to influence the world, and that he did!! Along with my heart and soul, Guru shook up hip hop. Love of my ears, songs of my heart, Ill always have you as my anthems. Peace be with you, you beautiful soul and wise man, and may peace be found in all who share the pain of our loss <3
My condolences and prayers go out to guru’s family in this time of morn, I want to thank you for blessing my self an the rest of the world with such a talented artist an great human being. A piece of Hip Hop was truly lost today. Rest In Power Guru, safe travels – You will forever live through the music
R.I.P. Keith Elam AKA Guru! May you rest in eternal peace. One of my all time favorite mc’s from my favorite group of all time, Gang Starr. Gang Starr FOREVER!!!!
guru was more than a lyricist, he was an educator, any young man should be given a gang starr discography when they turn 13 to get a taste of what to expect out of life. Guru and Gang Starr was the soundtrack and motivation to my life since I heard The Militia back in ’98, I hold them in the highest regard possible as my favorite hip hop group of all time.
On another note, GURU’s words touched me and all my friends, last year a good friend of mine died in a tragic motorcycle accident cause some dumb bitch was texting and ran a stop sign.. I was too distraught over all this to say anything so when I sent flowers I did not put my name, or his on it. All I wrote were the words of Guru: "Above the Clouds, Above the Crowds, Where the sounds are original, infinite skills create miracles, warrior spiritual, above the clouds reigning down, holding it down" now Keith Elam is doing the same….much respect love and admiration for the reality and perspective you brought to this planet. One Love. Rest Peacefully
YGuru and Gangstarr was and still is so important to the foundation of hip hop…Guru is one of the best to ever hold a Mic…RIP GURU you will never be forgotten

Man was a voice of deep reason when we all needed it. Grew hip-hop exponentially with the monotone flow that contained more colors than a nation of clowns. Simple thanks are hardly enough. RIP GURU
I was blessed enough to catch Guru in Cali @ RTB some years Back! His energy level was CRAZY!! Thank You & Premo for the Hip Hop you gave the world! You Will Be Missed.
I found out about Gang Starr a bit late as I’m only 18 but their music was timeless and I bump the entire catalog. Guru was perfect for DJ premier’s beats. R.I.P. to a legend and a great person
My Condolences to your Family & Friends! Guru…Your work was Classic, you’ve left your imprint on the earth which definitely reshaped HipHop. You’ll be continuously treasured thru your music…One of my favorite Joints was ‘Mass Appeal’, but Jazzmatazz is a wicked sound too. May God Keep you and give to you as much as you’ve given to us…We Love you much, Now Be Blessed and Rest!!!
this is for me the worst day in the history of hip hop…guru you were simply a legend…saw gangstarr perform in 2003 in london & i was blown away by the performance just like i was with any track guru did with premo.
real hip hop cannot to loose people like you..may you rest in peace guru
rite now its difficult for me at this moment…just got done shedding tears over this….wanna thank you for one for being one of the emcee’s who woke me up and showing me the true art what hip hop is….your one of the people who saved my life and made a huge impact on my life…we’ll meet you soon… my condolences goes to friend and family as well…. R.I.POWER!!! ONE OF THE BEST AND TRUE EMCEES EVER PLACED IN HIP HOP PERIOD…. Keith Elam AKA G.U.R.U.
i first met Guru in NY back in 89and he showed me mad love i have toured and a met him over the years and he was always a cool brother and had time for everyone i have a lot of good memories of him which i will for ever in my heart i will miss you brother
RIP Guru, my oldest Gangstarr memory is their European gig in ’92 or ’93, right after the Daily Operation album. They were touring in a minivan back then, driving from gig to gig. Saw Guru a few times after that while touring with Gangstarr and Jazzmatazz, always a great person to meet, kind and respectful.
Rest in power… One of the original artists who made me love REAL hip hop… Inspired me, made me dream – literally with jazzmatazz as my alarm… Peace love and unity from the UK
I remember bumping into Guru around 2001 on Canal St NYC.. He was shopping for jewelry and he looked happy and healthy. It’s sad how this disease took the best of him. I’ll always remember albums such as Daily Operation, Step into the Arena, Hard to Earn, and Jazzmatazz vol 1.
Since I am hip hop, Guru and Gangstarr will always play a part in my life. Rest in Peace..
There’s usually some kind of Gangstarr track I can throw on a random playlist and still make it fit in with the rest of the music. Even playlists that are full of music from the most mainstream artists today.
Guru, though I never met you in person your voice has been with me most of my life. Your words encouraged me in hard times, motivated me through struggles, and were the anthems of parties and friendships. I know your music will live forever, I only wish that you could too. I am heartbroken today.
This dude set the tone of my own music by his tone. Never swayed. Stood Strong and upheld the tenants of Hip Hop. The Responsibility he held over the music he did with Primo was and still is something that current artist should take heed to. Guru was about what he spoke in his rhymes and made music to inspire, not to devolve and booty shake you.. Truly a legend and one of my favorite dudes. I’ll continue that responsibility in my own music. Thanks G.
Peace. Words can’t express how this shit feels. We were little-ass kids, recording "Dwyck" off of Yo! MTV Raps like 15 times on one VHS tape. his is a sad day. Very sad. He was BEYOND way too young. I’m putting an emphasis on health over everything besides family as a result of this. Rest In Power Guru. We love you 7. Peace
Damn, still can’t believe it. R.I.P. GURU. Saw them in2000 for the first time in Holland and loved the energy of him performing together with Premier. He will be missed!!
Step in the Arena is my favroite album of all time.
It is only by recognizing how precious and how short life is that we are most likely to make it meaningful and to live it fully and by understanding the death process and familiarizing ourselfs with it, we can remove fear at the time of death and ensure a good rebirth. RIP Guru
A Legend on his own or in Gang Starr, Guru was definitely a great lyricist. Inspired many, and will continue to inspire further generations with incredible music that he has made. Much love & my prayers goes out to the family of Keith Elam, friends, loved ones and of course to Premo, Dj Premiere.
well say what u want cuz all of mines is intact in fact ill hvae u open like a hookers gap. Bumpin Daily Operarion all day! Rest in Peace GURU one love!

I was wearing the tshirt that you gave me, when I got the sad news. You were always and will always be in my record bag, cant imagine a gig without a Gangstarr track. Thanx you so much! Love, respect and R.I.P, TFS
Simply the greatest. Guru came up and gave me props when I first start DJ’ing in 2001 NYC which is still one of the greatest complements I could ever hope for! His music will live forever.
I don’t even know what to say, Guru and Premo and like Phillies and Herb. I remember when I got into hip hop hearing Hard to Earn and think these 2 are dope. Then they dropped Moment of Truth pound for pound the great Hip Hop album EVER. Listening to Moment on the way into work brought a tear to my eye. Tracks with meaning, tracks with fire, REAL HIP HOP!!!!!
"The same sheisty cats that you hang with, and do your thang with Could set you up and wet you up, nigga peep the language It’s universal, you play with fire it may hurt you Or burn you, lessons are blessings you should learn through"
I still remember when we first met in ’92 like it was yesterday…we had our good & bad times…but it was always love….i miss u dearly&Love u with all my heart!! R.I.P. GURU!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN SHOUT OUT TO PREEM&GANG STARR FOUNDATION!!!! I LOVE U GUYS!!! ALWAYS!! ONE LOVE

You inspired a nation of millions, the Hip Hop nation. May you rest in piece and I for one know your influence in music will continue for many many years to come
@ 330 this morning I was holding my daughter reading my tweeter and heard of the sad new that a legend of the hip hop community had past. It still hard to believe Guru "GANGSTAR", whatever you remember him by is gone I remember watching Yo MTV raps just to see GURU. Rip from a tire hiphop head.
I used to write for the Los Angeles Sentinel and every time I met GURU he was always so warm, welcoming and repectful. Long live GANGSTARR!!! RIP GURU you will be missed…

R.I.P. to one of the greatest to ever hold a microphone. Keith "Guru" Elam, one of the realest artists I ever met, introspective, profound, conscious lyrics, responsible for some a lot of classic music. All I can say is that this is a BIG loss for us all. Rest In Power

words cannot express the sorrow i felt when i read this morning that guru had passed away. gangstarr is the most important musical group in my life. without guru and premier, i would not be the righteous and gifted individual i strive to be everyday. it breaks my heart that i have to write this. rest in peace guru, i will always love you and your music.
Guru will truly be missed… One time for REAL Hip Hop! Guru had a positive message and with DJ Premier they were one of Hip Hops hottest duos. R.I.P. Guru. Lets keep REAL hip hop alive in the remembrance of a legend! Hip Hop cant be dead if we keep artist like Guru blasting in the streets.

He made me discover the power of my imagination through images and words. He was the purest, the most honest, consistant MC ever. A real poet. I’ll always remember you and wish you still living. This is in memory of a next time!
First, he greatly influenced the development of the whole hip-hop culture! GANGSTARR turned my whole world view! I’ve played, playin and will always play the GANGSTARR’s music in my life shows and mixtapes! R.I.P. GURU

R.I.P. GURU. You were one of my all-time favorite emcees. I will miss the voice and the flow. You gave me insight and understanding into a world I would have never understood. A definite torch guiding us through the underground into the light. You were one of the finest on the mic. I feel as if I have lost one of my old friends. Thank you for doing what you did the way you did it. R.I.P.
I’m from Germany, and Guru’s Music is the type of Hip Hop that helps me, the Real Hip Hop. I think he is known by People around the world who are knowing what good Music is. He is dead, but like the Geto Boys said: "He always have a place in this world as a memory."
RIP Guru.. May you NOW be in peace in heaven that you couldn’t be in the physical form. Be with the Almighty that called you home too soon. Atleast you’re not suffering anymore. I hate that its when we lose a Great One is when we realize the impact they had on our being. God bless your family at this time. Nellie in CT.

Step in the Arena is my favorite album of all times!
"It is only by recognizing how precious and how short life is that we are most likely to make it meaningful and to live it fully and (2) by understanding the death process and familiarizing ourselfs with it, we can remove fear at the time of death and ensure a good rebirth."
no joke, i thought about guru this morning before i turned on my computer, only to read the sad news. gang starr had a major impact on me in the 90′s and i still love their mudic to this day. may your soul rest in peace mr.elam. your legacy lives on..
Gang Starr was a staple in my early life. I listened to Guru growing up. As a half hispanic half white kid growing up in the suburbs I took alot of heat for it. In 92 or so I started listening to alot of the grundge and alternative rock but still bumped Gang Starr, ATCQ, Pharcyde, the list goes on… When it came time for me in adulthood to go back to my roots and recognize what really spoke to me as a fan, I was right back bumping Gang Starr! I always found that Guru spoke to me like no other MC has. I will always be a fan of hip hop, but it will be Gang Starr and Guru till death. There is a lot more to the story of my relationship with Gang Starr that I am not getting into here but the point is, GURU, you will be missed by all cultures, races, ages, sexes. You have touched millions and I for one am grateful to be a witness to what you have done. I believe I have a wide range of music knowledge and try to use it in my everyday life, I have learned more from Guru and Premier than I have learned anywhere else. Thank you Gang Starr! Rest In Power GURU. LEGEND
GURU IT’S BECAUSE OF PIONEER’S LIKE YOURSELF THAT HIP HOP IS WHAT IT IS TODAY… I AM GLAD TO BE A PART OF HIP HOP AND HIP HOP LOST A TRUE MAN… WE LOVE YOU REST IN PEACE FOR REAL… ONE LOVE
R.I.P. Keith "Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal" Elam. Can’t stop listening to your classics without tears in my eyes. It’s sad to know you and Premo had to go out on bad speaking terms but I believe those sentiments expressed in the final letter were not yours, no man could harbor hate like that in their final moments. The Gang Starr life long fans know what it really is. Guru and Dj Premier forever.

As I sit here playing numerous Gang Starr tracks with too many to mention as my fav, my heart sinks knowing we lost a true emcee who lead me thru the golden age of hip hop before it got a blackeye from some of todays non-deserving rappers. Guru..We’ll miss you man. One luv.
They say it’s lonely at the top, in whatever you do You always gotta watch motherfuckers around you Nobody’s invincible, no plan is foolproof We all must meet our moment of truth

Guru. If u hear me. U know, u are one of my top 5 emceez. Your monotone style is really rare in the hiphop scene, and your lyrics are very impressive for me. U are one of the biggest influences of me.
I know you are in a better place, you are now really above the clouds, and us: the crowds. We will miss you. And you will live in our soul forever and ever.
Man…. what to say…. Guru was one of the illest to me. His flow was smooth, lyrically he was stompin on a lot of cats heads. He had charisma & a love for Hip-Hop. Not to mention Premo giving the soundtrack to his words. First time I heard of GangStarr was when I heard the song, "Full Clip". The energy & wordplay on that song inspired me to make music. "Attackin’/ like a slick Apache/Lyrics are trigger happy/ Blowin back your wig piece just for the way you lookin at me/"
CLASSIC! Carry on his life & the positive impact he made. RIP GURU!!! GANGSTARR LIVES ON!!!
The legacy that you’ve left on the Hip-Hop world is as impactful as any emcee of the past ten years. Without Gang Starr, thousands of emcees (as well as myself) would not be rapping. Rest in peace, Guru.
You became a real star of this culture and all around the world people singing and listening your inspirational songs. We will always remeber you. R.I.P and God Bless from Lithuania.
Guru, I prayed for you so hard when I heard you fell ill. I just wish you could have come back to your family and friends, even if it was only for a little while. You needed to know how many of us were out here praying and pulling for your recovery. My heart weeps and mourns the loss of you today. However, having said that, I know that you are finally free and are in good company with the angels in heaven. I love you and I thank you for sharing your wonderful talents with us. You are sorely missed. I love you! Your Fan, Stacey (tears)
Guru, You were one the best wordsmiths, poets and lyricists of our time. For real your words were thoughtful, intelligent and wise. You had a original style and were defiant piece in the hip hop culture. You and DJ Premier made some of the best hip hop music ever with Gang Starr. Can’t count the many classics you’ve been apart of. We celebrate your life Guru. Your legacy will live forever with the music you gave us. RIP Guru.. Premo, keep your head up sir…

I saw Gang Starr open for RATM back in ’99. I think that show helped shape what I am today. When I bought my first set of turntables, I bought a Gang Starr album with them. RIP homie.

Rest in Peace, I remember being a young girl and you were like one of the first Rappers I remember listening to with my older cousins. Even my mother use to listen to you back then. My mom’s friend Lisa was dating Cari in from your crew. You will be remebered! We are all put on this earth for a purpose, and then it’s time to go home. I will pray for your friends and family, that they will find peace amongst all the pain.
RIP Guru may Allah bless your soul and your entire family. We miss u a lot . Thk for all what u done for hip hop . This is one of the saddest day of my life . Much Love. Salaam. Keith We ‘ll love u forever .
I remember talking to a kid in high school about music. I asked him who his favorite rapper was, and he said "Guru." Blew me away. At the time most people here in Texas were listening to alot of crap on the radio. Guru, you really connected with your fans. I will bump your music forever !
Gang Starr gives me inspiration for life, Guru as much as DJ Premier… These men make want to be involved in this music game, and to do it with grace, dignity and honest music. From the bottom of my heart: Thank You, Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal.
I am so shocked at this. I had read he was out of coma and recovering so I was glad. But as soon as I found out he died my heart stopped. One of the greatest MC’s of all time. I hope he’s calm with his monotone style up in heaven.
You were a true legend and a shining light to the Hip Hop world. You were not afraid to say what needed to be said in a unique way.I know that your time here is done and that what you leave will be remember forever.I thank you for the memories that you helped create in my life.Rest in Peace my Brother.Arohanui.
One of the best Hip Hop group died yesterday since Guru passed away. R.I.P to the co builder of the so unique and legendary N.Y sound that reach to produce Gangstarr – Guru -
Guru helped keep me off the streets. There are a few MC’s who had the knowledge and poetic delivery to have me so caught up in the ryhme and the lesson included…they str8 scared me off the block. If not with fear with guilt. GURU helped save my life. A Mentor, A Leader, A Purist, and GOD. Peace
GURU was one of the last few true MC’s. He was a great artist in every sense of the word and (from a far) seemed to be a quality human being. He had swagger before people even knew what it was! Noth’in but love brother from DC (DRAMA CITY).
Guru u r a poet, ur voice and delivery so unique,so special. The beats so HARD…We will remember you with smiles and we will delight in ur music for years to come. Now u rest and stay forever young.
To much memories to be namned. What you and Premier represented with Gang Starr was what every little part of me wanted to be a part of. One of the best that ever was has left the building. R.I.P
Saw Gangstarr at the junction back in the day. It was a totally amazing show. I also saw Guru on the Jazzmatazz tour at the same venue. A friend of mine met him at the local record store and said he was a tru gentleman. Guru and Premo together were a match made in heaven. It’s a shame you left us to early. You will truly be missed.
Guru You are loved and missed already! Ppl say they wish u woulda lived. YOU DID AND DO LIVE! God works in mysterious wats and I believe u served a great purpose.
Guru is a huge influence on my own MC skills as well as the entire hip-hop community. Never again will there be an MC as unique as him. King of the monotone. Along with DJ Premier, they created Gang Starr, one of the best hip-hop groups ever. Easily in my top 10. Today is 4/20 and I’ll smoke a blunt in his memory while listening to "Take Two and Pass." Farewell Guru. I never knew ya, but through listening to your music, your ideas and knowledge, I feel like I did. Rest in paradise.
Guru You are loved and missed already! Ppl say they wish u woulda lived. YOU DID AND DO LIVE! God works in mysterious wats and I believe u served a great purpose.

Rest in Peace, Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal. Your music with DJ Premier as the legendary GangStarr has helped me through hard times in my life and meant a lot to me. I’m banging "Full Clip" all day in your honor, sir.
GURU…I will never forget the first time I saw "Words I Manifest". I lost my mind and was a fan of yours every since. I really loved the Jazzmatazz series. Its a sad, sad day in Hip Hop. RIP Guru

Guru has been and always be an inspiration for myself and Hip Hop. I am seeing too many damn times where so called "Hip Hop Heads" are asking, "Who Is Guru"? It is now time that young Hip Hop artists learn about icons such as Guru, because we can’t go forward if we don’t know where we have been. REST IN PEACE GURU. You’ll be missed here on Earth, but your music LIVES FOREVER.

the hurt i feel from this loss is more than i can grasp. i never knew him personally but his lyrics have kept me company through many trying times. he is and always will be a legend and i’ll always be a fan to the end.
Much of Guru’s music served as anthems to my life, he was truly a gifted musician and lyricist whose music and messages inspired me and helped me through many difficult times, the legacy he leaves behind will live on forever through the the millions of people he has inspired and Hip Hop worldwide.
I started listen to hip hop at the age of 10 and the 1st track i ever listen to was "who’s gonna take the weight?" then i grew up with all real gangstarr records. i grew up with your teaching and now i feel empty but at the same time really proud cause i chose you as a role model for my music. all hip hop followers in Rome and Italy are crying a real legend! your music will never die! R.I.P.
RIP Guru, your music was an inspiration and kept me above water when I was going through depression as an adolescent. When I first heard your work with Gang Starr, it made me realize what real hip hop is and that was my transition from wack hip hop to real hip hop. Your music opened so many doors for me musically, and if it hadn’t of been for your music I never would have listened to what is now my favorite music. I turned many of my friends on to your music and your music will live on forever through us. You will be missed brother.
Another one taken too soon. Why does it seem to be so true that the good die young. Someone so diverse and talented It really upsets me to have to see this news and then reflect on it. My thoughts go out to those closest to him. He will most definitely be very missed.
Had the pleasure of opening for you back in 2008 with Jazzmatazz. We talked for a good 30 minutes before the show. Thanks for the words of inspiration. I can only hope to be half as down to earth as you were.
I heard last month about the health issues with Guru and was gutted then but hoped for the best. Damn this news has shocked me and my family who are all true Gangstar, Jazzamataz and Guru fans – I hope his family are freinds can be strong in this hard time and work out any differences – for the sake of his memory. RIP KING GURU – TRUE HIP HOP EMCEE
"Guru has never been one to play a big shot It’s just the styles I got that keep my mic hot"
Many artists adjust to the scene. Guru changed the scene. He brought hiphop to countries all over the world. That’s why we join together now to say rest in peace. Much love from Stockholm, Sweden.
I met GURU back in the 90′s when I was trying to break into the music video game. I went to his office. I was working through Dino Delvaille, his point man at the time, and GURU was there laying on the couch. A cool concrete walled space with glass doors/walls as the entry. I walked in. He asked me, what’s your name? I said Maurice Roberts. He responded, I’m gonna remember that. I thought wow that’s it! I was gonna make it big time because he said he would remember my name. It felt like a date with destiny had been made and he would be waiting on the other side of success. I imagined once I climbed over that hill that he was going to say I knew you would make it all along. Well, we never met again but I will always remember that day. Peace Be Upon You Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal Keith Elam
It’s a real sad day for Hip Hop and Hip Hop lovers that we all lost one of the most greatest emcees of all time! R.I.P. Guru. You’re one of the true defenition of Hip Hop. Gang Starr for life…
Tragedy always seems to strike when we least expect it. Just last night I read poem (blog) from a sista, speaking on leaving her man for a new man. My commentary for that blog read "This is reminscent of "Ex Girl To Next Girl" by Gangstarr…but the female version:"Ex Man To Next Man". When I awoke this mornin’, the news hit me like a crisp drum pattern courtesy of Premo…CRAZY! May you rest in peace, but your "SOUL" shall LIVE ON…
Here comes a greeting from Gothenburg, Sweden. Thanks for the sounds, your music surely added beauty to this world! Still remember when I got a hold of Jazzmatazz 3 in highschool… Thanks!
Guru, jazzamatazz was the soundtrack to many a chill out, and as I learned today (Via DJ Sharam: Twitter) You also provided the vocal to a seminal moment in progressive House, "Roaches", One of my all time top 10.
Trough your music you inspired many like me to follow the truth and be a man of honor and respect instead of meaningless things that young men like me are doing anything possible to attain. As is I look around, I can say you were the only artist that people that I know that stick to the realness of life listen to. I am no one to tell you that you are a legend. But I can assure you the effects of you words will always be evident in my life and lifes of many like me. To me you are the greatest artist regardless of what genre of music. You might have left but your music will still be in our hearts. I hope and pray for you and your family. May Allah bless your soul.
RIP Brotha. one of my favorite MC’S and Gangstarr is one of my all time favorite. This really sucks we have to lose legends at such an early age. My thoughts are with Your family and friends. Keep your head up Primo. We all know the what was said is BS. Guru would never say anything like that. Guru is better than that. Guru and Primo forever man. "Gangstarr"
One of the very best I have seen to rock a mic live. A true individual in terms of the music, one of the most recognisable emcees you will ever hear. Truly sad day for music. RIP.
Rest in Peace Guru.. You were one in a million. It’ll be hard to EVER come by another artist with the talent you had. You always came with real rhymes and rapped about what actually goes on in LIFE.
i really hope that in my heart of hearts that Guru made peace with himself as well as the past before making his transtion..anyway much respect goes out to his family and you Too Preme be strong in this time of need!

Guru’s monotone flow was one of a kind. Nobody could rhyme behind a beat and sound more overpowering than him. He will truely be missed. Real hip hop is slowing disintegrating. =(
It was hard to hear, one legend and antetype of my youth was gone. He lives on in his music and the hearts of his fans and family. Love and energy to the bereaved from germany!

They say it’s lonely at the top, in whatever you do You always gotta watch motherfuckers around you Nobody’s invincible, no plan is foolproof We all must meet our moment of truth
I was about 12 when I first heard Gang Starr album "Moment of Truth" and since then I fell in love with your music. I can’t even describe how influential your music became to me. Even if it is hard to believe, years before you came to perform to eastern Europe, miles away from the states, in a small country called Lithuania, and even smaller city called Klaipeda, you always had a bunch of people, who admired (and will always continue to admire) your music. A day has not passed in my childhood without listening to The Militia, Work, and Moment of Truth. In your lifetime you have achieved more than a man’s mind can measure, thus, may your soul now rest in peace. You will be always remembered through the masterpieces that your have left for all of us to enjoy.
Just listening to lots of Gang Starr today really makes it clear that they were one of the best hip hop groups ever, if not THE best ever. Especially when it comes to the boom bap essence and aesthetic that I love, there is none better, I hope Premier is okay. It’s true about Guru’s lyrics, he has so many gems, as someone in comments was saying he laced almost every song he ever did with a message, not many did that and continued to do it. Could you fathom a video/song like Who’s Gonna Take the Weight on BET today, unimaginable. Despite whatever went down with the group I’ll always remember the line "Freud, a philospher, but I’m a realist, so philosophize this, without love we don’t exist"
Peace to the soul that was once responsible in nourishing our ears with nothing but beauty and knowledge. Guru was a master in dropping science. My sincere condolences to the family. He is resting in peace in a better place right now. Peace.
You inspired a nation of millions Keith; the Hip Hop nation. Your cross pollenation of music across the board will continue to inspire and educate generations or many many years to come. Go in peace brother, see you on the otherside for the jam.
I remember when I opened up for him at the Normandy Casino..he was a very cool cat still doin his thang with the same delivery and same style..it was like "damn, he’s still got it." He will be sorely missed in the hiphop community and it life itself. Rest In Peace Keith
Rest In Power Guru. Me and my dude Rick met you at the Rap Sheet conference in 96. I remember you dappin’ up everybody, drinking and partying. You made your impact on the world and will be remembered forever. ABOVE THE CLOUDS fam…
My deepest and utmost respected condolences go to the millions of fellow people of the world grieving this Great loss. As a promise, I will continue to carry his guided wisdom and strength by knowledge and truth to thy self and those who surround me. I feel even as just a fan, that my views and definition of Hip Hop and music as an entirety has been completely renewed because of the forceful lyrical master we now mourn. None will ever be able to replace or duplicate what Guru has done for many of us… All we may do is to thank thee above, for allowing us the pleasure of seeing and understanding such a pioneering icon of this lifetime; One of the GREATEST and very latest… Please rest in peace, Keith "Guru" Elam.
You will be missed in the Physical World Dearly. May we Remember your Love for Eternity. See you on the other side of experience. Peace to his Family and Close Friends.
I honestly don’t know what to say. You have given us all something to remember about what the true meaning of Hip-Hop was. Not just in music, but in lifestyle.
I interviewed Guru via telephone in 2003 as part of a BlackVoices.com Black Music Month feature. He and Premier were busy promoting The Ownerz at the time. There were two things I remember about that interview. 1. My awful questions (LOL) and 2. How down to earth he was.
Guru, peace and much love from Germany. Many of my friends still don’t belive that one of the best artists ever is gone forever. Gang Starr brought me to HipHop and you won’t be forgotten. Rest in Peace.
Rest in paradise My first gangstarr song I ever heard was rite where you stand and from there my love for real hip hop grew and grew thank you guru for opening my eyes to the real I will be eternally grateful for that and my thoughts and prayers go out to your friends and family

Read, study lessons and build your inner power. These are words I live by and cary with me wherever I go. Thank you for everything you will never be forgotten. My condolensces to the Elam Family, to all the friends and all the fans.
uru your verses shaped my consciousness growing up. I have your "Moment of Truth" album memorized by heart. I listened to it on what seems like a thousand different long ass bus rides home from school. Even though your group was called Gangstarr, your words often kept me out of trouble and on the straight and narrow. I am indebted to your life’s work, it made mine better. RIP
Thank you for reminding everyone what "Real" Hip-Hop stood for to the whole universe. Though you may not be here with us, your spirit and words will forever be unlimited.
RIP Guru… just glad i got to see you at the Riverside Newcastle UK early 90s best years for hiphop by the best hiphop artist as in the name truly "Gifted"
I wish you were here cos your philosophy was mad deep. I’m gonna miss your energy in this world. Thank you for narrating all those trips you took us all on. I don’t think any emcee has a body of work that could stand next to yours without being jealous. Man. Rest in Peace God. Say wuddup doe to Dilla for me.
Your were so gifted and fluent in vocab I loved listening to u. I will miss seeing your sexy smile frame and just you in general. I don’t think you got your just do because I just recently saw and learn of you and you were underground the whole time but one thing is I am glad I did get a chance to hear your message and you will be missed.
R.I.P Guru – you and Premo are the reason I ever started to love hip hop and why, to this day, no other music genre will ever compare in my eyes. Condolences to his friends and family – hope you are in a better place!
Guru and Premier gave so much to the music community and truly changed my approach to production and DJ’n…."From Your Own Mind Ya Know?" RIP Guru!! DJ Nu-Mark
So many of Guru’s songs have left such an indellible mark on my life it’s hard to list them all here. Just know the monotone rhymes and unique skills were, and always will be, loved and appreciated. One love.
R.I.P. To Guru. Gang Starr will always go down as my favorite hip hop group of all time. Shouts To the entire Gang Starr Foundation. Preem, I love u my Brotha !!!

What a tragic loss to the world of hip hop. Rest In Peace "Bald Head Slick", "Mostly Tha Voice", The "Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal" …with much love from Kenya
I can’t believe it! I guess that what folks always say when we lose someone? I was introduced to Gangstarr in Spring 1989 while watching a video show called "The Box". From the opening bars of "Words That I Manifest", I knew that these cats were totally different. They were sampling cats that my old man listened to. Since my old man mostly bumped jazz in his ride, I learned to like a lot of it as a shorty. I heard the Gangstarr sound and was proud that my old man hipped me to dope jazz!
Fast forward to Fall 1989/1990, I was a freshamn at Morehouse College and Gangstarr began to set the soundtrack for my college experience. I later found out that Guru infact graduated from Morehouse too and I was proud that "The House" produced one of the greatest lyricist. I knew a sista that went to Clark Atlanta University in the early to mid 80′s and she knew Guru before the Gangstarr days. She said that he was mad cool!
I saw Guru and Premier perform in Atlanta in the early 90′s at a spot called The Phoenix. It was a great show! Guru had a lot of charisma to say the least. I remeber my roommates and I buying anything associated with the Gangstarr Foundation (Group Home, Jeru, Big Shug).
On of my greatest college memories was at a party where they played "Mass Appeal" when it 1st dropped. What a great time.
We’ll miss you but better yet, your music will always remain in our heart and minds, so thanks for all the hip-hop classics you left behind for us to hear, Guru. I hope you are living better in paradise while chilling with other players in hip-hop we lost too soon like Eazy-E, Biggie, 2Pac, Big L, Big Pun, Jam Master Jay, Proof, Mac Dre and Mausberg.
Power to the people who knew you personally and touched by this big loss.
Your music will never be forgotten, I have always and will continue to do so, blast your music in my car and vibe all day. Rest in Peace my man and indulge yourself some time with J Dilla and Nujabes while your up there.
I am really hurt that a man like him couldn’t have the chance to explore more than what he did. Guru was a living legend and had a tremendous style like no other. He will be remembered… Peace.
Not too many words to say except rest easy Guru. Your solo records, and Gang Starr’s records always stayed in my crates even even if I was spinning a da+m bar mitzvah. LOL! Seriously, ever since me an my sister were watching Ralph McDaniels Video Music Box one day in 88′, or 89′, and the video for "Words I Manifest" came on, we knew you and Premier were and are HIPHOP!.
I cant say the same for that other cat, who will remain nameless.
-DJ OhsoKool 90.3 FM WHCR – NY Sugatreats: The Radio Show
RIP Guru…Got to hang out with you in Sausalito my dude at the record release party for jazzmatazz one and with you in the hollywood hills with shug and rob one….You will be truly missed…Premo never let his legacy die or the Gangstarr Foundation diminish..4:20 should be now remembered each year as GURU of Gangstarr day….Lightin’ L’s for the man, father, and legendary MC……..Guru and you are like Pete Rock and CL….Two interlocking voltrons that formed a magic formation…RIP GURU 1 L to the OVE andrew b fresh 1
No words can describe the impact this man had in me and Hip Hop worldwide. I remember when i was just a kid, hangin with my friends in the parks every night and listen to Gang Starr.I was trying to memorize all the words while my friends were skateboarding. When i was like 13 years old and i had to ask a girl out, i was so nervous that before i asked her i listened to the 4th cut on the second Jazzmatazz album, Looking trough the darkness…I played it over and over again. But thats how Gurus music was, real. It helped me look trough the darkness and see what i can achieve with a little bravery and a sacrifice. Just like he had done. He was one of the best to ever bless a mic and he was one of the reasons that i got into Hip Hop.Now i do shows and sell records in my own country. I was just a little kid standin on a block in a small ass town in Finland with no money in my pocket, but i had incredible mentors and teachers in my headphones…Today i lost one of them. I extend condolences and sympathies to the the Elam family.
This is a huge loss for HipHop and his family/friends. I never had the chance to meet Guru in person but his music helped me out alot back in the days.
I will never forget "moment of truth" or "above the clouds"
My heart goes out to the family stay strong in these hard times!
His music was a huge part of my growing up. I’m still sorry I missed the Gang Starr shows in Germany back in the days. Thanks for everything. The ? remains.
RIP GURU. YOU HAVE TOUCHED MANY HERE IN CALI WITH YOUR DOPE LYRICS. GOD CALLED YOU SOONER THAN WE EXPECTED. YOU WILL BE DEEPLY MISSED BUT NEVER PLAYED OUT. YOUR FAN MARIO
Gang Starr single-handedly pushed a small, flickering interest I had in hip-hop into a passion that will never subside. "Daily Operation" has been and will always been my favorite hip-hop LP. Absolutely killer from beginning to end. Guru’s voice and rhymes was steadfast, pertinent, passionate and always entertaining. To learn of his passing was a huge blow for me. Needless to say, it’s going to be Gang Starr all night. RIP Guru, saying you will be missed is an understatement. You were one of a kind.
A part of hip hop was lost on Monday, but his music and legacy live on. Mr. Elam was a truly great man and will be missed, not only as a brilliant musician, but as a human being as well. R.I.P. GURU
One of Guru’s greatest gifts on the mic was his clarity in thought and articulation. His stories would unfold almost right in front of your eyes a sad day in hip hop we just lost a legend RIP
"Oh yes I’m greater than all MC’s when I breeeze give me room please I be like fascinatin when I be updatin Cuttin off wack kids, pullin their trump cards I thump hard, and make em say that I’m God" –The god mc is now ETERNAL– R.I.P. GURU
I am really upset about Guru’s passing away. It has brought tears to my eyes that one of the greatest is no longer here amongst us anymore. His music inspired me and all of us. I truely hope he finds a better place beyond earth. I feel for his family and friends. R.I.P. Guru
Man. I’ll never forget sitting in my room as a kid listening to Daily Operation and Hard To Earn over and over again, picking them apart. Or the summer when everyone was bumping Moment Of Truth. I loved those days!! Pure spine-tingling nostalgia. Guru was a huge part of my childhood and formative years and I will never forget him and the way his music made me feel. R.I.P.
My name is Bogdan, I am from Romania and I would like to send my deepest condoleances to GURU and his fam. Super loser does not exist for me. Gang Starr 4ever!!!
I lost a very influential part of my teenage years..we all will reminisce gangstar which w/o either one there is no gangstar but through primo, other mcs djs and who of heard of guru we will remember ,..he taught alot and his words will live through fans like myself as i catch myself in mid conversation saying a monotone line..hes never forgotten he kept it real for hiphop and us who were involved a legend a classic..Guru be at piece and best wishes to the fam too AND IM OUT!
RIP Gift Unlimited Rhymes Universal. I’m feelin’ so sad but as I go through Gangstarr & Guru discography it makes me happy and thanksful to Guru for being so great and inspirationnal. I will never be be forgotten. May he rest in peace. Peace.
No other black man made this white boy feel more included. Guru was an inspiration. Thank you Guru, and thank you Guru’s family for giving us this shining Starr.
One of the greatest, Guru is and will always be the most influential and the most respected on the current generation MC. Rest in Peace… Sa traeshti in pace…покойся с миром…
RIP GURU – although many have come after and "changed" the Rap Game; only a few "created" the Rap Game. He was a Creator and will be always remembered for his contributions at the very beginning!!! I dedicate "Meet Me In The Sky" to Guru!
Met Guru a few times, interviewed him once, and saw him & Primo rip shows every time they came to London Town. A true gent. RIP Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal
R.I.P Guru, one of the most distinctive and warm voices in hip hop. Sounds like he had a major leech sucking his blood near the end but I’m sure he knows who really had his back now.
They say that music can change and inspire lives. That is exactly what the music of GURU has done. With his work with DJ Premier and others, he has truly inspired and touched a lot of people. My GOD rest the soul of a great and true artist.
I’m very sorry for this loss. I started listening to Gang Starr when I was 15, with Hard to Earn; in my country, Per_, it`s was really hard to get hip hop, but I had a tape. I’m so sad, but I know Gangstarr and Jazzmatazz will always be heard. Mass Appeal!!!
I remember hearing Guru for the first time with Premier on the soundtrack for Mo Better Blues. One of my favorite tracks to listen to was Jazz Thing. You knew when it was Guru rapping. His voice always got your attention. His lyrical talent will be unmatched in todays state of hip hop where everything is watered down. Guru, you are loved and will be missed. Rest in peace and go and sit with the King.
Work and full clip are some of my favourite tracks of all time (and there to name a few!). RIP Guru – you were a truly talented and inspiring individual.
My thoughts go out to your close friends and family during this difficult time.
Rest In Peace Guru. Your message helped carry me thru my darkest times & continues to this day to inspire and support me in the new path I’ve chosen. Utmost love and respect goes out to this Soldier of Truth. You will be missed but never forgotten. Giftted Unlimited Rhymes Universal.
Lemonade is still a popular drink and although that may not be entirely thanks to you, I still would like to think that you contributed, immensely. Also, of course, you contributed to the world by making eternal music together with Chris. Thank you! Rest in peace, as you deserve.
REST IN PEACE GURU! Definitely one rapper who made me…your work will always be appreciated…"So like they say, every dog has it’s day-and like they say, God works in a mysterious way-so I pray, remembering the days of my you youth, as I prepare to meet my moment of truth"
Rest in peace GURU, God bless you. You’re in good company now, and your wise words and legacy will continue to live on. Peace to all of his family, friends, and everyone who held him in high regard. Hold your head up Primo.
R.I.P. Guru one of my favorite mc’s! I’ll never forget watching BET in the very early 90′s, late 80′s and seeing the video for Manifest for the 1st time, and my mom coming in the room sitting down and start tapping her feet cause she liked what she heard, and I remembered telling her he’s from Boston just like you! I’m just a couple of years younger than Guru was but some of my most fondest memories were my college days in the late 80′s and early 90′s listening to Gangstarr. God bless the entire Elam family and DJ Premier, it’s a really sad day in hip-hop…..
1988. Manifest. From then on, I’ve been a fan ever since. The music will always be here, but the voice can never be replaced. May you rest in everlasting peace.
"Five foot eight, Guru the Great" – A true Hip Hop Legend whom I had the absolute pleasure to meet! I cannot express how much I feel Guru, Gangstarr and Guru’s Jazzmatazz have influenced Hip Hop for the good and can lift my spirits with the knowledge that his musical legacy will live on long after his untimely passing. Rest in Peace.
There are no words to express the impact Keith’s lyrics had on my life growing up in Chicago. A gifted MC with a MESSAGE. That’s what appealed to me in those crucial formative years of my life. Gangstarr was one of the first groups I learned about when getting deeper into Hip-Hop and Hip-Hop CULTURE helped make me who I am today. His contributions to the culture are immense and the culture is indebted to him. My prayers go out to his family and REAL friends during this time of need. You will never be forgotten. Thank you for the wonderful gift, Keith.
REST IN PEACE GURU,Gangstarr siempre ha sido una medicina para mis problemas y siempre ser_ el perfecto ant_doto contra esa mierda que hoy en dia nos venden por Rap. Triste dia tambi’n en Espa
You have been a glorious inspiration to me! And will never forget your passage true Lisboa 2 years ago – it was my 29th birthday! may YOU rest in Peace – GURU
Rest In Peace Guru…You taught me to not be afraid to speak my mind and keep your people in mind. To be conscious of what you rhyme about is not the "norm" in rap music, and you’ve been doing this for over 20 years with no fear!!! Hip Hop has lost a true GENERAL!!! SALUTE!!!!!!
With wisdom left behind for the masses to follow, you soar to the ultimate height..to a land where the melodies are never ending…amongst angels …hanging with Tupac no doubt in the ultimate jam session in God’s great studio.
MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH YOUR FAMILY…SENDING LOVE …GGWRAPS
YOUR WORDS MEANS A LOT TO ME… MOMENT OF TRUTH MEANS EVERYTHING TO ME… YOU WERE THE TRUTH…MATTER OF FACT I’VE LEARNED HOW TO LIVE WITH YOUR LYRICS…YOUR TEACHINGS WILL LIVE FOREVER IN ME…THERE ARE SO MUCH THINGS TO SAY…BUT IT’S BETTER TO STOP…AND JUST LISTEN TO YOU MORE AND MORE TIMES…
Guru’s voice and Primo’s beats were the definition of hip hop for me, they still take me back when I need to go back. That true artists soul will live on forever.
Keith has had so much influence on me, in art and in becoming a better person. His death hit me hard. But he will never be forgotten. R.I.P Keith Elam.

RIP: GURU.

RIP GURU
I was blessed to have met GURU on several occasion but the first time I met him was probably the most memorable. It was 97 and we were at club ZEN on South Beach back when Washington was still cool. I was with Tony Touch at some other spot when Tony said lets bounce and meet up with GURU at ZEN. I was more than excited to meet dude. About 10 minutes after we were introduced, some dude pulled out a gun and licked off a couple of shots after an altercation with another dude at the club. We all hit the deck and after it was all over we put one up. It was one crazy night and I will never forget it.
R.I.P. Guru.

Will always love your music, you took Hip Hop in directions it never went before.

R.I.P. Keith Elam AKA Guru! May you rest in eternal peace. One of my all time favorite mc’s from my favorite group of all time, Gang Starr. Gang Starr FOREVER!!!!
RIP Guru, love from Long Island NY
guru was more than a lyricist, he was an educator, any young man should be given a gang starr discography when they turn 13 to get a taste of what to expect out of life.
As you said on Sabotage you really were a boss figure.Rest in Peace.I’ll forever miss that voice!

RIP GURU

RIP Guru, my oldest Gangstarr memory is their European gig in ’92 or ’93, right after the Daily Operation album. They were touring in a minivan back then, driving from gig to gig. Saw Guru a few times after that while touring with Gangstarr and Jazzmatazz, always a great person to meet, kind and respectful.
man i from germany and i love guru and gang starr. when i saw the headline, man, a good day has turned to a bad day. it’s hard to swallow this.
rest in peace and much love from your fanbase all over the world.
one love
"Is this really the end, or is it a new beginning. A new reality….."
Your words provide the soundtrack to my life.
Gang Starr Forever!!! Rest in Paradise Guru!!!
Big R.I.P. y’all clear dat letter issue up. No taints 4 Guru. still use his drop 4me from a coupla year’s back. 1
RIP Guru. "Moment of Truth" was like my soundtrack through high school. You’ll definitely be missed.
biggest ups G… R.I.P.
Thanks G.
thanks for blessing my life…in many a dark moment ur music showed me a way…REST IN POWER my brother
Definitely one of the greatest!
Thank you for the great music!

"The same sheisty cats that you hang with, and do your thang with
Could set you up and wet you up, nigga peep the language
It’s universal, you play with fire it may hurt you
Or burn you, lessons are blessings you should learn through"
RIP Keith Elam The game will never be the same.

no joke, i thought about guru this morning before i turned on my computer, only to read the sad news. gang starr had a major impact on me in the 90′s and i still love their mudic to this day. may your soul rest in peace mr.elam. your legacy lives on..
LEGEND

Man…. what to say…. "Attackin’/ like a slick Apache/Lyrics are trigger happy/
Blowin back your wig piece just for the way you lookin at me/"
CLASSIC! Carry on his life & the positive impact he made. RIP GURU!!! GANGSTARR LIVES ON!!!

RIP Guru! But you’re immortal by your music with Premier!
RIP Guru, he was the best here in earth, now he’s the best in heaven.. He’s allways alive in our hearts..
RIP Guru. Your words have touched many. Say hello to my father up there in heaven.

Had the pleasure of opening for you back in 2008 with Jazzmatazz. We talked for a good 30 minutes before the show. Thanks for the words of inspiration. I can only hope to be half as down to earth as you were.
Peace to the God Guru may the Universe welcome back a great piece of Allah’s energy.
"Guru has never been one to play a big shot
It’s just the styles I got that keep my mic hot"

I met GURU back in the 90′s when I was trying to break into the music video game. I went to his office. I was
working through Dino Delvaille, his point man at the time, and GURU was
there laying on the couch. A cool concrete walled space with glass
doors/walls as the entry. I walked in. He asked me, what’s your name?
I said Maurice Roberts. He responded, I’m gonna remember that. I
thought wow that’s it! I was gonna make it big time because he said
he would remember my name. It felt like a date with destiny had
been made and he would be waiting on the other side of success. I
imagined once I climbed over that hill that he was going to say I knew you
would make it all along. Well, we never met again but I will always
remember that day. Peace Be Upon You Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal Keith
Elam

Tragedy always seems to strike when we least expect it. Just last night I read poem (blog) from a sista, speaking on leaving her man for a new man. My commentary for that blog read "This is reminscent of "Ex Girl To Next Girl" by Gangstarr…but the female version:"Ex Man To Next Man". When I awoke this mornin’, the news hit me like a crisp drum pattern courtesy of Premo…CRAZY! May you rest in peace, but your "SOUL" shall LIVE ON…
R.I.P-G.U.R.U.
Divine, PEACE!
Rap in peace brother.
xx
first Dilla now Guru, not many true heads left, another masterful musician lost to us, such a shame.
San Diego, California.
Rest in peace Guru, he has been an inspiring icon to myself and many others.
Gangstarr was the reason I fell in love with hip-hop back in the day.

They say it’s lonely at the top, in whatever you do
You always gotta watch motherfuckers around you
Nobody’s invincible, no plan is foolproof
We all must meet our moment of truth
Rest in Uhuru

Thanx for your legacy and rest in peace. U r my legendary hero of all time! Never forget! Gang Starr is 4eva! Gifted Unlimited, Rhymes Universal!
DAMN!!!
Long Live Guru!!!
RIP Guru. You will be missed. I remember your concerts at Toad’s Place New Haven, CT. Some of the best times of my life.
R.I.P. Guru, first time I heard you was actually ‘Battle’, and I never looked back. A true legend.

I just heard the terrible news. Rest In Peace. He may not have know but he was also a teacher.
He taught me, and many others (that don’t live in english speaking countries) how to speak the language.
And he did it with lots of flow and style.
Gifted man leaving to soon

Not too many words to say except rest easy Guru. Your solo records, and Gang Starr’s records always stayed in my crates even even if I was spinning a da+m bar mitzvah. LOL! Seriously, ever since me an my sister were watching Ralph McDaniels Video Music Box one day in 88′, or 89′, and the video for "Words I Manifest" came on, we knew you and Premier were and are HIPHOP!.
I cant say the same for that other cat, who will remain nameless.

R.I.P Guru!
Thanks for all the clasics!!
I extend condolences and sympathies to the the Elam family.
rest in power guru keithy e.

R.I.P Guru you will be missed by the real hip hop community.
RIP Guru….
Rest In Peace Guru.We grieve,we remember…Жаль,что лучшие покидают нас,так рано.
"Oh yes I’m greater than all MC’s when I breeeze give me room please
I be like fascinatin when I be updatin
Cuttin off wack kids, pullin their trump cards
I thump hard, and make em say that I’m God"
–The god mc is now ETERNAL–
R.I.P. GURU
mostly the voice will last forever.
No Matter What We Face, We Must Face Our Moment Of Truth. RIP Keith Elam aka GURU.

I am really upset about Guru’s passing away. It has brought tears to my eyes that one of the greatest is no longer here amongst us anymore. His music inspired me and all of us. I truely hope he finds a better place beyond earth. I feel for his family and friends. R.I.P. Guru
Guru’s lyrics inspire me everyday. No way a light like that can ever be put out.

RIP Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal
thank you Guru. R.I.P.
R.I.P Guru, one of the most distinctive and warm voices in hip hop.
Sounds like he had a major leech sucking his blood near the end but I’m sure he knows who really had his back now.
So much sadness here in the UK right now but also joy at the memories he’s given us. Soundtrack to our days as young men, here in Bristol.
We miss you Guru, your music lives on for our generation and future ones
Rest in peace!
Thank you for inspiration and cool. Condolences to family and relatives.
Rest in Peace
Rest In Peace Guru!
You will be sorely missed. You were an inspiration to millions of people worldwide.
One of the greatest of all time and a legend that will live on through your music forever.
Rest in peace and go and sit with the King.
rest in peace to one of the greatest.
your music touched my heart.
hope you are ok and in peace

REST IN PEACE GURU! Definitely one rapper who made me…your work will always be appreciated…"So like they say, every dog has it’s day-and like they say, God works in a mysterious way-so I pray, remembering the days of my you youth, as I prepare to meet my moment of truth"
Guru (1966-2010) was a seminal MC in perhaps the greatest duo ever. Peace and love to you in heaven God, you’ve been a major inspiration to me.

Rest in peace, Guru.. Gangstarr’s music will live forever!!

I’ll always remember when Guru and Premo performed at the St James in Auckland back in 04. One of the best concerts I’ve been to.

RIP Guru. Gangstarr was one of the best groups of ALL time and Guru was always one of the illest emcees ever. The first time I heard Take It Personal was when I discovered them and I’m glad I did. The best Gangstarr song of all time has to be Dwyck. I bump Gangstarr all day, everyday. RIP
