from Pittsburgh PA grew up with Guru’s music and the music of Gangstarr. Means so much in my life. So unique and so cool. Much respect and love.Always makes me think of my cool cousin Sean and many memories of youth.
one love Guru
This last weekend the best grafitti artists from Alkmaar, The Netherlands, came together and put up a sick-ass piece as a tribute to Guru. Rest In Peace, GURU. Hiphop lives overhere and u will never be forgotten!
To the family of Mr. Keith Elam (a.k.a., “Guru”), may the God of creation be with you through the laughter and the tears. Guru was a master, a man with noticable sense of dignity and truth. I remember Gang Starr way back in the day. They were different. They were intelligent, powerfully so. Their beats and sense of soul was flavored with a unigue taste-dignity? Yes, dignity. Then, POW!! The Jazz element comes out! Thinking back, it was there early on. It was the sense of dignity that was just behind the showdows of the feeling in the music. I know everyone can’t be the same, but I can’t help but wish and hope a lot of the Industry today-and that’s what it has morphed into, an “Industry”-take some lessons from Guru and spirit. I don’t listen to hardly any of the new stuff today. (Is it me? Or are they not really saying much?). The Industry has too many of ‘em behaving like mindless puppets, and that’s sad to me. It should be sad to all of us who was touched by the Intelligent age of Rap and Hip-hop. Just a listen, ya know? Just some listening for the young ones. It’s not a matter of imatating the past, it’s a matter of building POSITIVELY on it! I love Jazz. I love me some Jazz, boy!! Like the power of thoughtful, intelligent and honest lyric, Jazz can move you like it’s fraternal twin. Guru got that. The melding of the two in a serious, deep collaborative, was powerhouse insightfulness. To God be the glory for Guru. One of his children who was gifted with the power of word and music. May he be in a high state of peace and joy, with all saddnesses of our troubled ways cleansed from his bright, loving soul.
Just wanted to say baldhead slick was a true insperation to me and many others who grew up with gangstarr.he was truly an artist who composed abstract lyrics and those ill beats from primo…cmon yall gangstarr till the end dunn.yo elam…rest kid.say hello to big l and biggie smalls.-knowconscience
Yo, Peace to the god! May he rest in eternal peace, and his legacy and music will live on forever! I can honestly say that I can’t remember a song he was part of that i didi not like or bump! Hardcore to the smoothed out Jazz he was the com plete package and did not care which way the music industry was revolving but actually created new art forms of expression which I admire! I would say he was a major influence in the way that made me want to be an aspiring MC. I just guess that he was called up to heaven for a higher purpose! So with that, Thank You Keith “Guru” Elam for being a role model to look up to and for being a real innovator in this hip hop biz! You will forever be missed!!
P.S.
I also had the pleasure to see Gangstarr in San Diego in ’97 even tho I had trouble getting to the show. I remember after the concert he came back out onto the stage after the show and talked to fans! Real humble , Real person , Down to earth!
One Love.
